Week 5

This has been a great week. I lost 3 pounds and won the biggest loser at work for this week. We have weekly winners and at the end of 6 weeks a big winner. It helps keep me motivated plus I have others encouraging me to keep going. I have to admit I am pretty proud of myself. All of my clothes are getting looser but also my skin is starting to hang as well. I am definitely going to have to start working on tightening that back up.  I managed to get to the gym one day and that is a start. I had a really busy week as we were getting ready to head to Florida.

Rick is still keeping blood sugars at normal range for 5 weeks in a row. Next week we are going to start cutting down on meds. I am so excited that he has finally taken control of this. Diabetes is nothing to mess around with. He continues to tell everyone that Nutrisystem saved his life. I think maybe he might be right. He went to the eye Dr and found out that he has damage there but hopefully with his blood sugar staying normal, it will not get worse.

We are so happy and excited to be on this path to better health.

Week 4

 Week 4

We are losing it slow but sure. Rick lost another pound and his sugar levels are still in the normal range. I am down 2 more pounds. I was so excited to get on the scale this morning and it was below 150 pounds. I have not been below 150 lbs. in years. I was thinking I was stuck with all this extra weight because I had tried losing it before and got discouraged and gave up.  I had been to the Dr. to try to find out why my metabolism was not working and he told me I was not eating enough. Now my logical thinking is if you want to lose weight, you eat less. But the Dr said because I was only eating once a day, my body was hanging on to it because it was in starvation mode. While his explanation made sense, I just didn’t put it into action. I had gotten into the habit of snacking during the day and only eating a meal in the evening. Usually that consisted of fast food/pizza.

With the Nutrisystem program, I am eating at least 6 time’s day and I am losing the weight. I will admit that it is not easy eating changing your eating habits that have been developed over the years. Sometimes I get a craving for something that I just have to have. So I indulge but not to the extreme. I have always been a big Dr Pepper drinker and one day this past week, I just wanted one so bad. So I went through the carry out and bought one. I drank half and poured the rest out. So I still count that as success. I have noticed that stress seems to trigger these cravings (Dr. Pepper and chocolate), so I am going to try some new stress relievers.

Last week we joined a gym, but didn’t have time to go, so that was on this week’s plan. I started last night and we are going together today.  I see this as a two-fold opportunity. We will be benefiting ourselves with the physical exercise and also doing something together.
So we are off to another successful week.

Week 3 : Still Losing

So, it was an uneventful week but we each lost another pound. Rick continues to keep his blood sugar at normal range. That in itself is a miracle. We made a big decision this week to join a gym. I had purchased an elliptical machine the first week we started but I have a bad knee and have not been able to use it much. I know that exercise is important for weight loss success so we decided to join Snap Fitness. If you join on line you get the first 30 days free to try it out. So starting July 30 we will be making our first trip. I am noticing lots of flabby skin where we are losing the weight and need to do some toning. I don’t want my grandkids call me the grandma with “bingo arms” (flab that hangs down under the arm that swings when you raise your hands to bingo). They have informed me that I already have them so I need to get to work. We will be in Florida for a week (work trip) and I am trying to figure out how to stick to the plan while we are gone. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Week 2: Looking Good

This week we did not have a really great weight loss but we had still had victories.
Rick only lost 1 pound but his sugar was in the normal range (70-120) all week. I know that for some this may not seem like a big deal but his sugar has not been anywhere near the normal range for at least 2 years.
He is so excited that he tells everyone he sees that Nutrisystem saved his life.
I lost only one pound as well, but I lost 2 inches on my waist and 1 inch around my chest. So it is all good.
I have to admit that I think the reason for my low weight loss is that I was so busy that I skipped a few meals. I just didn’t have time to stop and eat. So next food order I will order more ready to grab lunches. I am so busy during a work day that I can’t always stop to eat.
I also got online and checked out some recipes to try so I am ready for a new week and new food dishes.
Stay tuned and I will let you know which ones I tried and which ones we liked.

It's a Miracle: Week One

Week One: It’s a Miracle

I would have to say that Week one on Nutrisystem was a success. I am so excited to finally find a program that works. As of the end of week one I have lost 8 pounds. I know that this is not going to be the normal loss but it is enough to kick start me into wanting to keep working on it. I have to admit that I had a few cheats but nothing big. I took the grandkids to McDonald’s and I found myself eating fries as I was plating their food. I realized this week that I am a grazer. I nibble on food while I am cooking, I find myself wanting to munch on snacks while I am working. I had not noticed this before I had to watch everything I ate. I will have to admit that the program is not hard but at first it is time consuming. I had to plan ahead what our meals were and what our add in groceries would be. It took a little time to write a grocery list then plan each day in advance. I also had to portion out the veggies and fruits; otherwise Rick would eat more than allowed. We had developed a lot of unhealthy eating habits that will take some time to break. But we are excited to be in this journey.
My husband, Rick, also lost 8 pounds but even better news is that his sugar levels have dropped almost to normal. For the first time in years, this week his sugar was only 150 in the morning. I can’t remember the last time it was under 200 and his “normal” was usually 350. We went to the Dr for his regular checkup and talked with the Dr about it. He said the goal for his sugar levels is to be under 200 (normal range is 70-120). He explained that anytime my husband’s sugar is over 200 it is causing damage to his body, even if he can’t feel it happening. He told him to keep doing what he is doing and he wants to follow up in a month,May even lower some of his medication. So we are super excited that it is this low.Rick says he can see better and he has more energy. I chuckle when I see him running in place and swinging his arms around. His exercise has been nearly nonexistent. I have been telling him for a year that pushing the buttons on the remote does not count as exercise.  I purchased an elliptical and the first day he could do about 5 rounds, now he is up to 100. I even overheard him on the phone telling our Pastor that Nutrisystem saved his life.
Thanks to Nutrisystem for making this success possible for us. Looking forward to more great results.

You never know

I love summertime. The grandkids are in sports and keep us very busy running to different games and juggling the schedule so they all get fair time. School is out and  and some of  them  spend more time with us. But I see that as they grow older they are also busy and do not want to spend as much with Grandma as they used to. That is when  I have to get more creative and entice them to come with promises of junk food fests. LOL.
But I love and cherish every moment I have with them. I read of families losing loved ones and kids dying from different diseases or tragedies and I am so grateful that God has kept His hand on my family.

A few weeks ago we were on our way home and saw an accident. The ambulance and rescue vehicles were there and we could see one of the autos involved was a white van and the other was gray and too mangled for us to tell what type of car it was. Our first thoughts were to call our two daughters and check on them, one of them drives a white van and the other a gray Taurus. Thankfully, they were both home safe with their families.

My second thought was , although my kids are safe someone will be getting a call that says their family member was in an accident and injured. I started praying for those families. It reminded me of the many families that are hurting because of tragedies and bad news that they get. We go about our daily business but somewhere someone is struggling just to make it through another day. Some one may be stuck , grieving for a lost loved one and can't seem to go on.

June is typically a hard month for us. My husbands mother and step dad both died in the month of June and my own mother's birthday is on June 20. But my time of grieving is past. How can I feel sad knowing my mom is no longer in pain but is in Heaven celebrating her birthday with Jesus.

Lesson Learned this week: Celebrate life, love those who are still here with us, give of ourselves to help others, rejoice in the blessing that God has given us.
